Coaching U5/U6 or new to coaching:
Each eage group has it's specialty but the youngest age group can be extra challenging as most coaches are getting their feet wet in "soccer". While we start noticing 2nd generation of coaches, most of the newly additions might have played themselves but never coached little players. To ease the learning experience and increase the joy, remember to have fun for both the players and you! This document will guide you through the most important topics you should cover during the first years. Once these are mastered, venture out and add extra game-based activities.
Under 6 we have adapted Fifa laws to co-exist with the ROYSA rules. For example we don't have assigned referees, therefore a team's assigned person can pick up the task. The attached flyer contains all information needed to bring authority in the game :-) TIP: use a parent, so you can focus on the game itself.

Coaching License Reimbursement:

ROYSA encourages coaches to increase their skills by actively pursuing coaching licenses. The USSF D,E,F and Y-licenses are currently reimbursed by ROYSA. Please see the MSYSA website for the ongoing schedule. Similar courses from NSCAA will be considered also, please contact vicepresident@roysa.com for any related questions.

Video Library

Over the years, ROYSA has collected several soccer videos that the coaches can check out. Many new videos are added.

DVD for the Novice Coach

Learn how to organize and conduct training sessions for U6, U8, and U10 boys and girls. US Youth Soccer's introduction to Coaching Youth Soccer features live training sessions for each age group, plus a downloadable companion booklet. A great resource for any coach working with our youngest players for the first time! More information on this video can be found at US Youth Soccer (opens a new window). This new DVD from US Youth Soccer can now be borrowed from the ROYSA video library or purchased for a nominal fee of $3.50.ROYSA. Email Ivan De Wilde to obtain your copy!

Literature

A recommended coaching magazine that's informative from cover to cover is Success in Soccer with detailed and pictured training sessions for U6 to Adult training. If you are part of MSYSA Coaches Connection or NSCAA you get a nice discount as well.

Risk Management

All ROYSA volunteers including coaches, assistant coaches and team managers,  MUST have a State Risk Management card. For more information about Risk Management read the MSYSA website program.

The card can be obtained via at the following web address
ROYSA adheres to 100% compliance!

Skills Link

Great link to a website that explains and shows all kinds of soccer drills for the goalie on down to the forward. Don't be confused by the title "Football"  this is a website created in the U.K. were soccer is football, or is it football is soccer???

Some Soccer Tips

 Goalkeeper clinics
During the next couple weeks, ROYSA is offering goalie clinics for our future goal stars. If you check out the schedule you will notice that there are "Beginner" and "Advanced" clinics for the U8 and U10 division. There is no need to attend all of them as they cover the same topics. The multiple offerings is to distribute the amount of attendees.
The older divisions have specific topics assigned to allow a more focused training. There's no need to reserve, just show up for the session according to your age group. Younger kids will be send home! Also, try to attend as well to assist the training organization.

House team trainers
For Fall 2007, ROYSA is again offering training sessions for our house teams. For more information and scheduling, click here. Send your request to the vicepresident.
Remember: coaches HAVE to attend to assist your team with the provided trainer. It's the intend to divide the group up in section by which the trainer will guide each group through several activities.
Note: the trainer sessions follow the same principle as the games. The training is on unless there's lightning in the area then it will stopped for 15 minutes. If more lightning is observed the session is cancelled.
